A Secret Kept A Novel Tatiana de Rosnay 9780312593315 Books

I read and loved Sarah's Key, so I looked for more books by this author and bought them. I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much, but I usually stick to non-fiction or historical fiction. This was neither. But it was interesting and the story drew me in from the start and kept my interest to the very end. I was disappointed that the secret really wasn't that big of a deal. I was fascinated with Clarisse and wish there had been more about her family. Her sister's name was never mentioned, as I recall, and no one ever bothered to try to find her, which I thought was odd. I could have done without the sex scenes. Really. Totally not interested and totally unnecessary.

The author is actually very good at telling a story and is very descriptive without using too many adjectives as some authors do. I have high hopes for this one.

A Secret Kept A Novel Tatiana de Rosnay 9780312593315 Books Reviews

While it was an ok read, different than anything I usually read, recommended by a friend, it was an ok book about life and living it and the mystery that revolves around it that we may never fully understand sometimes.....it was life and death and while I never really grabbed on to one character and felt close to them, you can relate and I didn't put it down after 100 page so that says something )
Very disappointed with this book. Read it for my bookclub. I had to lead. There wasn't much of a plot, poor character development. I decided to focus on Paris and Gois Passage for my bookclub.
This is my second Tatiana de Rosnay novel. I enjoy the descriptive journey, and the emotional journey she takes me on. Both novels were unpredictable. She always keeps me thinking about love, and life, and how personal a journey life really is. Does anyone really know you?
I had read reviews of this book before I bought it. Sarah's Key was an amazing book. When I heard she'd written another book I decided to read that. Some of the reviews were critical and I don't buy a lot of books because there are so many free. I am so glad I spent that 9.00. It was a great story, imaginative and never predictable. I was curious that the initials for this book and Sarah's Key were purposely the same? I feel I know the characters, know how they look and sound. She is brilliant at bringing the characters across to the reader so clearly. Tatiana de Rosnay is joining my list of favorite authors and I shall read everything she writes, maybe twice !
Although this book was interesting and engaging, it was rather disappointing after reading Sarah's Key, another Tatiana de Rosnay novel I read a few years ago. Sarah's Key is one of my favorite books, so I was expecting great things about of this novel.

A Secret Kept is about Antoine Rey and his sister, Melanie, and their discovery of a deep family secret. The secret causes them, mostly Antoine, to reconsider his life and reevaluate his current family.

I would like to believe that if my expectations were not set so high I would have enjoyed this book more. I do feel like it skipped over some story lines that could have been developed and would have made the plot more interesting. The characters were not deeply developed either. Overall, it was a good light read, but if you haven't read Sarah's Key, check it out first.
While reading this book I many times thought, "Really? Again?" It is most definitely an interesting story with lots of action, plots and sub-plots and many characters. Rosnay did a good job of making the reader feel the emotions of the characters and helping the reader visualize an important location in the book. While I found the plot line involving Antoine and Melanie's mother somewhat engaging, other subplots were a bit much.

My reservations about this book are the constant theme of death, depression and upsetting events. I understand that Rosnay was trying to make correlations and that she wanted death to be a major theme. I believe she carried this theme much too far, to the point of being farcical. A truckload of awful offal (yes, I know) strewn over the road the characters need to drive on to get home after a funeral? Ludicrous.
Set in France, Tatiana De Rosnay's "A Secret Kept" centers on architect Antoine Rey's search for truths about his family. When Mélanie, Antoine's sister, turns forty, he decides to treat her by taking her to the island where their family -- their parents and grandparents -- used to vacation. Neither of the siblings has returned to the spot since the death of their mother in the 1970s. The trip brings back many memories, particularly of their charming and beautiful mother. They are both pleased and somewhat surprised to find that people on the island still remember their family -- especially their charming and beautiful mother.

But not all memories are pleasant, and Mélanie's journey to the past brings back recollections of incidents she had forgotten -- or suppressed. Before she can tell Antoine about them, she is seriously injured in a car accident.

Troubled at not knowing what his sister was going to tell him, still in love with the wife who left him for another man, struggling to be a good parent and to recover a desire to work at his profession, Antoine begins to delve into the past. He uncovers secrets that not only shock him, but also reveal the truth about his family.

A great many books have been written about family secrets, the damage they can do, and the aftermath they cause when revealed. De Rosnay's book, however, is a sensitive treatment of the theme and a finely drawn portrait of how people's lives can change when they learn the truth.

Very Good.
