Escape to an Orphanage eBook Marvin Dorfman
Marvin's childhood goes from idyllic and sheltered to a living nightmare overnight when his Jewish mother, unhappy with her marriage and violent against her husband as a result, suddenly rejects her entire identity and runs off with her soulmate, another woman, and young children in tow. She finds the Lord or so to speak and wholly devoted to her new lover, turns a blind eye as the deeply misandrist and sadistic Edna soon begins finding reasons to beat and starve young Marvin. Eventually found but manipulated to reject his father, Marvin and his sister do not escape their private Hell until they are voluntarily released on a whim and sent by train back to what Marvin remembers as a caring and loving family. However that is no longer the case as he soon realizes. His mother's conversion to Christianity and Lesbian affair has stigmatized him and his sister to the point that not even their own father is willing to take them in. After being shuffled amongst relatives, Marvin finds himself separated from his sister and placed in a children's home for Jewish boys, where he finally finds the safety and sense of belonging that has alluded him for so long. For him after years of abuse and abandonment, it was enough to go to sleep in a clean warm bed, secure in the knowledge that he would not be dragged out of bed in the middle of the night for punishment and did not have to worry about where he would lay his head the next evening. To a child of the modern era such things may not be significant seeing as most have no idea that there were once orphanages in the United States, but Mr.Dorfman's poignant story proves that institutionalized care can be the best option for children trapped in the worst circumstances and a true home for the unloved with nowhere else to go.Product details

Escape to an Orphanage eBook Marvin Dorfman Reviews
This felt very authentic and the story was captivating.
The characters in this memoir feel very full and dynamic--each with several facets to their personality and likeability. Nothing is completely black and white, even in a story where it seems like it would be.
It's also very interesting in a historic sense, as the author takes the audience through New York of the past.
Interesting family dynamics and how it affects the children.
Written very well and easy to keep track of the characters.
The book holds the reader's interest and desire to get back to reading it.
The reader should be aware that this is a true story.
Captivating, well written, humorous,( even though a very sad story). I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. Had to keep reminding myself that it is a TRUE LIFE story. Amazing read, highly recommend it. Also brought back a lot of memories of that era.
