We all know that Alfred Hitchcock was the Master Of Suspense, but did you know he was the most *experimental* filmmaker in history?

This book focuses on 18 of Hitchcock’s 53 films with wild cinema and story experiments which paved the way for modern films. Almost one hundred different experiments that you may think are recent cinema or story inventions... but some date back to Hitchcock’s *silent* films! We’ll examine these experiments and how they work. Great for film makers, screenwriters, film fans, producers and directors.

Films Examined “Rear Window”, “Psycho”, “Family Plot”, “Topaz”, “Rope”, “The Wrong Man”, “Easy Virtue”, “Lifeboat”, “Bon Voyage”, “Aventure Malgache”, “Elstree Calling”, “Dial M for Murder”, “Stage Fright”, “Champagne”, “Spellbound”, “I Confess”, and “The Trouble with Harry”, with glances at “Vertigo” and several others.

This is a wonderful addition to my collection of Hitch books. I've studied Hitch since college (in the dim, dark days of Reagan...) and this is an excellent book about many of Hitch's techniques.

Martell breaks down not only the better known Hitch films, but many of his that I haven't seen (and now, I must find them.) and opened my eyes on things I'd missed while watching the other films. I would focus more on technique and this book also had me focusing on story, reoccurring themes and archtypes.

Hitchcock Experiments In Terror edition by William C Martell Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

I love the William Martell books. They are all educational. This one makes the skin crawl. It is focused on writers to learn to write more gripping and entertaining at the same time. It's worth the money for sure.
This book has a degree of overlap with Hitchcock Mastering Suspense, but the latter is the more useful volume.
There are chapters that are (as far as I can see) verbatim identical to the other book, yet the author describes these as a series.
I think it's disingenuous to claim that books that share content are a series. You can call it value for money, or an attempt to pad out the length, but if you had to buy just one, I recommend Mastering Suspense and not this one. If you can't get enough Hitchcock analysis, then you will want them all, and the overlap is just an irritation.

The title of this book leaves a lot to be desired. While the author does point out Hitchcock's experiments, or at least the ones covered in this book, the movies in question are rather short on terror, and most are not even close to horror. The author himself describes most as thrillers.

Nor does the author discuss or analyse techniques for conveying or inducing horror or terror in a movie. In contrast, Mastering Suspense does discuss techniques to generate suspense, though it could have gone deeper, at least it goes there. In contrast, this book doesn't even attempt to address the "terror" mentioned in the title.

For the reasons above, I found this volume a disappointment, though the analysis of the movies is as good as with Mastering Suspense, there seems little to explain why the movies covered were picked for this volume. Some make sense, most do not, and feel like entirely arbitrary inclusions, present simply because the author feels they are examples of experimentation. If the book had been called, Hitchcock a history of his experiments, it might have been more accurate. Other experimental movies are skipped over, and some are picked, and it lacks focus.
Most people think the Hitchcock just made a bunch of old movies. Not true! Like D.W. Griffith who in the early 1900's created the first movie language that all film makers use, Hitchcock added to the film language greatly through hi experiments. Martell's book shows us how with out Hitchcock there would be no movies like Pulp Fiction. Easy to read and seems more like a conversation with a friendly film buff. Great Fun!
If you write screenplays or are just a fan of Hitchock's movies, this is an informative book that goes into detail about the technigues and plot lines used in them. The basic plots are given to refresh your memory before the author dives into why the movies worked so well. I liked how the author points out newer movies that have used Hitchock's plot techniques. I also liked the extra behind-the-scenes info that is given.
Great work through of some of Hitchcock's iconic films. Great detailing on why these worked or didn't work and particular experiments Hitchcock tried, some that worked and some that did not. Highly recommended, helped me get a handle on what I was looking at and why it was done that way and how to write to have that happen in my screenplays
As usual, William Martell grasps the fine points of plotting and storytelling, in this case through the creative vision of auteur Hitchcock. Like his previous books, "Experiment" is one part tutorial, one part sheer enjoyment, as Martell is a compelling storyteller in his own right. Whether you are reading this for its instructional value, or you just want a peek behind the camera, you will find this both rewarding and engaging.
If you're a Hitchcock fan this is an obvious must have, but if you're a horror fan or thriller enthusiast, this book is for you too. It goes beyond the usual "He was a genius" stuff and really gives you a new lens to see old favorites through and an interesting look at the how and why of what scares us.

As usual Mr. Martell suggests movies I would not normally watch, but end up truly enjoying, one of my favorite aspects of all of his books and he makes me sound smart at parties, an added bonus.
