This is another truly superb romance by Brenda Joyce. Set in England in 1874-1876, DARK FIRES tells the story of Nicholas Bragg, Lord Shelton, Earl of Dragmore, aka the Lord of Darkness (so called by all of London after the rumors he murdered his wife). He is an American, raised in wild Texas with a mysterious past, who is living on his 25,000 acre estate outside of London, when one day delivered to his door is Jane Weston, the 17-year-old illegitimate daughter of an actress and the son of the Duke of Clarendon, his dead wife's grandfather. The girl is his ward, a ward he didn't know he had.Instantly attracted to the beautiful young blond, and aware she is becoming infatuated with him, Nick decides if he's to resist her, he must take her to London and find her a husband. Of course that won't be easy as he is infamous, shunned by the Ton and Jane is from the wrong side of the blanket. Not to mention he doesn't really want her to wed. Once in London, their attraction finds its finish and then everything goes to Hell in a hand basket, so to speak. Ah, but the telling of it is just superb. I couldn't put it down.
This is the 4th in the Bragg series (see full list below) but you can read it as a stand alone. There are references to Nick's past which is a part of the earlier books but you won't lose track or find yourself at a loss. Like a lot of people of mixed heritage, Nick is stronger for it...and more handsome. Though Jane was illegitimate, her parents loved each other and she is proud to be their daughter. One of the secondary characters with only a small speaking part is priceless...Thomas the butler, who is there throughout the book. Unlike some romances, the conflict here comes across very naturally from the circumstances, very believable. It's a story of two people deeply in love but fighting it all the way.
I highly recommend this one!

Dark Fires A Novel Bragg Saga Brenda Joyce 9780440614173 Books Reviews
Brenda Joyce was one of my favorite authors back in the 90s. After she started writing more than romance I tried to follow but fell disinterested. This is one of the books that I missed back in the 90s and it took me back to that time and I did enjoy the book overall. The only criticism I have is I felt that Jane and the Earl had an overkill of misunderstandings between them. I understand that those kind of misunderstandings are to create tension and interest in the story, but really how can one expect to be barraged with tenderness if you are lashing out, and rejecting the other person...Really?... yet both the earl and Jane apparently felt this way after speaking harshly to one another. It was a theme through most of the book. Finally in the last 20 or 30 pages they get it together and give each other a chance. Their disagreements did keep you on your seat and want to know if their next encounter would bring peace or heart ache but I guess in my opinion there was too much heart ache and not enough peace.
good bok
I LOVE Brenda Joyce but this book was awful.
I could not even finish it.
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. I started reading it at about noon the first day and finished about 3/4 of it and then completed it the next morning in a few short hours! They chemistry between Nick and Jane were off the charts!! They love they felt for each other and the passion came across great and pulled you in. I loved the fact that they had their little family from start to finish. This is one of Joyce's top books (for me that is. I loved it!!!
My only drawback was that they fell in love a little two quick but that is nothing to take away from the book. It is great anyway. Also the best friend drama was a little bad but as I said nothing to take away from the book! A very good read!!!! I would give this book a 4 1/2 but I gave it a 5 because I would rather give it a 5 than a 4!
Fell in love with the Bragg family. Superb writing Ms. Joyce.
Compared to what is offered these days for new reading material, the older authors that actually take the time to appropriately research for their stories have them beat hands down. It gives stories substance...you rock, Brenda!!
She cried. Then they kissed, and she cried again, trying not to cry, or at least not let him see her cry. Never would he see her cry. But then she cried again, and again, and again. She cried a lot. And often. She cried almost through out the entire story. On the bright side....Brenda Joyce sure knows how to write a love-hate relationship, full of red hot passionate love, and for tht....I thank you.
